About Fence Stability
Fence Stability is a free online engineering calculator that helps site managers, contractors, health and safety officers and temporary works designers assess the stability of temporary site fencing against wind loading. It is built specifically for the UK construction and events sectors, where Heras-style wire mesh panels, debris netting and solid hoarding are routinely deployed on exposed sites and must remain safe in gusting wind.
The tool calculates two key factors of safety for each fence configuration: overturning (the panel tipping about the leeward edge of its stabiliser foot) and sliding (the panel being pushed along the ground). Wind force is derived from the dynamic pressure equation F = ½·ρ·v²·Cf·A, where the force coefficient Cf reflects the porosity of the fence type. Users can model wire mesh, debris netting on mesh, and solid hoarding, with adjustable panel dimensions, foot types, ballast, bracing arrangements and ground conditions. Built-in UK wind data by town and season helps pick a representative design speed, and the results can be saved, printed or exported to PDF for site records.
Fence Stability is developed and maintained by Soros Limited, a UK software company focused on practical engineering tools for the construction industry. The calculations are indicative and are intended to support, not replace, the judgement of a qualified engineer. Always confirm final deployments on site with a competent person.
